The Best Time to Take Newborn Photos - Denver, Colorado Newborn Photographer

HOW OLD SHOULD MY BABY BE FOR A NEWBORN PORTRAIT SESSION?

Simply stated, less than 10 days old. In our newborn photography studio, though we often see baby’s older than this, we prefer 7-9 days old.

The reason for this is simple.

  • A newborn is sleepiest at this stage.

  • Typically, digestive issues and colic are not present yet, making for a more peaceful baby.

  • They require less food to get into a “milk drunk” state.

If your baby arrives early, by more than two weeks, you can likely book your newborn photos based on their gestational age vs actual birth date.

WHEN SHOULD I BOOK MY SESSION?

We recommend researching and booking your newborn portraits towards the start of your 2nd trimester. This will give you time to also schedule a maternity session (if that’s something you’ve considered) with that same photographer as well as ensure their availability.

Count 7 days out from your due date and schedule on that day. Should your baby arrive early or late, stay in communication with your photographer so you can slide your session as necessary.
