Photographing newborns requires flexibility, patience, practice and a true love of the craft. With so many variables outside your control as a photographer, you have to know the best way to capture a baby even when it gets difficult.

Our sweet baby girl appeared to have gas the morning of our session. Because of this, the session went longer than anticipated which increases moms anxiety. She can’t help but to wonder, “will we get anything today?” Thankfully, the experience I’ve had over the last 2o years equipped me for this moment.

When a baby has sharp gas pains, the pains come quickly and leave quickly. Knowing this and understanding she would be most comfortable when in her mother’s arms, we photographed during those small windows of comfort.

Our patience paid off. Eventually her gas subsided and she fell fast asleep. As an experienced newborn photographer, I knew she would. So I spent much of the time encouraging mom and dad not to worry.

When you are expecting and looking for a photographer to document your new baby, experience counts. It’s important that your photographer knows how to keep your baby safe and comfortable. You photographer should have an understanding of babies that goes beyond photographing them. My experience as a mom of three babies has greatly influenced how I photograph newborns.
